This time it was not a street, but a station and it was not to remove a name but to impose it. In the center of the city, the old Estación del Norte has been called Estación de Abando for decades, in reference to the central neighborhood where it was built, in the financial and commercial heart of the city. This intermodal terminal is today the terminus of the commuter and long-distance rail lines and their connection with the metro. Construction is already underway on a major refurbishment to accommodate the underground arrival of the high-speed train. An operation that will require one of the largest and most expensive engineering and architectural works, budgeted at around 700 million euros.

In 2010 the projects for the integration of the station within the Basque Y project were presented, with the high-speed train that will connect the three Basque capitals. The arrival of the TAV to Bilbao will involve the total remodeling of the Abando station.[8][9]
On February 28, 2017, the Ministry of Public Works and the Basque Government closed an agreement for the definitive access of the high-speed train to the three Basque capitals, which contemplates the full integration of the railroad and the stations in the cities. Abando station will be underground and will have two levels. Level -2 will house the eight high-speed (long-distance) tracks and platforms. The -1 level will be reserved for RENFE commuter trains (5 tracks) and the former FEVE (3 tracks). In addition, a parking lot will be built underneath the current track yard.[12][13][14][15]
On March 8, 2018, the Minister of Public Works, the Minister of Infrastructure and the Mayor of Bilbao presented the final project for the remodeling of Abando and its connection with the Basque Y at the City Hall. The station will have three floors, 13 bus docks, 550 parking spaces and a connection to the subway. The HST will reach Bilbao underground in 2023 after an investment of 730 million. Work on the terminal could start in 2020 and be completed three years later. The 90,000 square meters freed up after the undergrounding will then be urbanized, a process that could last until 2030.[18][19] On November 22, 2018, it was announced that the cub
