Fernández del Riego, Francisco. Salvador Lorenzana, Cosme Barreiros, Adrián Soutelo, Adrián Solovio. Vilanova de Lourenzá (Lugo), 7.I.1913 – Vigo (Pontevedra), 26. Essayist, narrator, writer and editor.
He is possibly the most awarded figure in the history of Galician culture, as he has received, among many others, the following awards: Essay Award of the Galician Center of Buenos Aires (1948), Pedrón de Ouro Award (1979), Lifetime Award of the Barrié Foundation (1982), Castelao Medal (1985), Trasalba Award (1988), Cultural Creation Award of the Xunta de Galicia (1992), Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Vigo (1992), Galego Egrexio (1993), Fernández Latorre Prize for Journalism (1994), Otero Pedrayo Prize (1995), Gold Badge of the University of Santiago (1996), and the Prize of the Arts and Letters of Galicia (1997).

His work in the cultural field and his extensive work make him one of the main Galician intellectuals of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. His books include essays on Galician culture and literature such as Historia de la literatura gallega, Galicia en el espejo, Diccionario de escritores en lingua galega or La generación Galaxia and foreign books such as Letras de nuestro tiempo and Escritores de Portugal y Brasil.
In 1995 he donated to the city of Vigo his book collection, which constitutes the Francisco Fernández del Riego Library-Museum. Until December 2009 he was director of the Library of the Penzol Foundation in Vigo.
As one of Galicia’s leading figures, he was recognized with numerous awards (Trasalba Award, Pedrón de Oro Award, Gold Medal of the City of Vigo, Cultural Creation Award of the Junta de Galicia, Celanova Award, La Casa de los Poetas, Castelao Medal, Arts and Letters Award of Galicia, etc.). He was named Doctor honoris causa by the University of Vigo and Gallego Egregio by the Fundación de los Premios de la Crítica.

The artistic collection, the core of the museum and highly representative of Galician art since the end of the 19th century, is made up of 254 pieces, 79 of which are paintings by artists such as Maside, Castelao, Minguillón, Díaz Pardo, Torres, Colmeiro, Ruibal or Granell.
In this artistic area you can also find works by the sculptors Failde Gago and Elena Colmeiro, as well as photographs and personal objects that testify to the erudite condition of Francisco Fernández del Riego and that confirm, in short, the intellectual, Galician and friend of the arts significance that Fernández del Riego had in artistic circles.

Francisco Fernández del Riego belonged to the generation of intellectuals that emerged around the group Nós and was one of the main architects of Editorial Galaxia, as well as being at the head of the RAG between 1997 and 2001.

Essayist and writer, Del Riego joined the Real Academia Galega on November 3, 1960, proposed by Manuel Gómez Román, Ramón Otero Pedrayo, Manuel Casás Fernández and Sebastián Martínez-Risco y Macías, entity that he presided between November 29, 1997 and the same date in 2001.
