El periódico publica ediciones diarias separadas en castellano y en catalán[1]. Las dos ediciones combinadas venden más de 125.000 ejemplares al día, lo que convierte a El Periódico en el segundo periódico de mayor tirada en las regiones de habla catalana de España, por detrás de La Vanguardia, que también se publica en ambos idiomas. A nivel nacional, El Periódico fue el quinto diario de interés general con mayor difusión en España en 2011[2].
El Periódico fue publicado por primera vez el 26 de octubre de 1978[3][4] por Antonio Asensio Pizarro[5] para ofrecer un periódico progresista catalán vinculado al socialismo catalán. El periódico es también de centro-izquierda[6] y es propiedad del Grupo Zeta[7][8].
Uno de los últimos directores, Rafael Nadal, es hermano del líder socialista catalán Joaquim Nadal. En un principio, El Periódico sólo se publicaba en español, pero el 27 de octubre de 1997 comenzó a editarse en catalán[9]. En la actualidad, las ediciones separadas se distinguen por la placa roja de la portada de la versión española de El Periódico y la placa azul de la edición catalana.
