Serra: «we charged salaries in line with the market».

The former vice-president of the PSOE government and the former general manager of Caixa Catalunya are accused of having raised «disproportionately» their salaries and those of the main managers «who were aware of the crisis situation of the entity or, at least, in a position to know about it». Todó, for example, was paid 684,713 euros a year in 2008 and went on to receive a salary of 1.36 million in 2010. The entity’s profits were progressively reduced (493 million in 2007, 185 in 2008, 77 in 2009), but the income and endowments to pension plans of the directors increased. Narcís Serra was paid 1.2 million between 2004 and 2010, despite the fact that the presidency was a representative position.
The trial is scheduled to last 28 sessions, until November 30, but the schedule could change. This Thursday and Friday are scheduled for preliminary questions and it will not be until Thursday, October 11, when the defendants will begin to testify, four by four, starting with Serra and Todó. Then it will be the turn of some thirty witnesses, later six expert witnesses will testify, and then the final conclusions and reports will be presented.

Section 8 of the Barcelona Court of Appeal will allow Serra and the rest of the defendants to be absent if they so request during the trial sessions once they have testified as defendants.  This has been requested by Serra’s lawyer, who has already advanced that Serra will request to be absent, being out of Barcelona, on October 24th and 29th, since he is scheduled to testify on the 11th of this month.

He has related that the Board of Directors of Caixa Catalunya was a burden to manage it, since it was formed by eight people chosen by lottery among the depositors, seven chosen by the founding entity, that is, by the Diputació de Barcelona, three councilors coming from the local corporations and three more from the trade unions. «The result of the draw is what it is,» he summarized.
«He also ruled out that he was not prepared to take charge of a financial institution, because he was mayor of Barcelona and «when someone has taken charge of the accounts of a city, he can take responsibility for those of a savings bank». And he said that the president of the Diputació de Barcelona, who was Celestino Corbacho at the time, told him that if he had solved military problems when he was Minister of Defense, he could solve that of the bank. However, Serra acknowledged that he would not have accepted the executive management of the financial institution.

In his statement this Thursday as a defendant in the trial for the alleged disproportionate salaries of the entity, Serra has pointed out that his salary «is not the subject of accusation» and explained that it was set under the tutelage of the Generalitat.
«The management of my salary was under the tutelage of the Generalitat and with transparency to the citizens and the bodies of the bank,» said Serra, who at one point in his statement said that he is also critical of the remuneration of the financial sector.
