Por parte de su padre era bisnieto de Luis José Sartorius, I Conde de San Luis, que fue Presidente del Gobierno de España de 1853 a 1854, durante el reinado de la Reina Isabel II. Por parte de su familia materna era primo hermano tanto del marqués de Portago, conocido como Alfonso de Portago, como del actor y escritor José Luis de Villallonga y Cabeza de Vaca, 9º marqués de Castellbell.
Sartorius se casó primero con la argentina Isabel Zorraquín y de Corral (1940-2009) el 24 de abril de 1964 en la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Buenos Aires;[2] posteriormente se divorciaron en 1974 (dado que el marqués se volvió a casar por la Iglesia católica en 1988, cabe suponer que su primer matrimonio obtuvo la anulación canónica antes de esa fecha).
