It was born as a substitute for the program Rompecocos (adaptation of the program Brainstorm)[4] in a cultural quiz show slot that had begun in 1991 with Cifras y letras.[5] The program presented a novelty with respect to the previous programs of the slot, the contestants could eliminate each other, which motivated the implementation of strategies.[6] In Saber y ganar, three contestants compete against each other in a series of quizzes and tests.[7] In Saber y ganar, three contestants have to correctly answer general cultural questions in different tests.

On July 17, 2021, it was announced that Juanjo Cardenal would not continue in the program and would retire from the media. In his place will be Elisenda Roca (Journalist and presenter of Cifras y letras during the La 2 stage) from August 23, 2021.

It’s not only Supermagnificent but also centenary, congratulations!  To celebrate it as he deserves, we have prepared a program with special tests on some of his favorite subjects: as he has a PhD in Philosophy, he could not miss this subject. We also talked about his books and his passion for sailing.
Our contestant had this purpose in mind since he rejoined the contest on November 16, in what was his 86th program, after having participated in the special program 5,555 with another Magnificent of the stature of David Diaz.
At times Enrique Gómez has made us suffer as he has faced the Challenge and even fallen once in the Pit, but he has managed to get out of it and continue steadily towards the 100 programs. So he has won this centenary title, getting a total prize of 81.590€ and all our admiration.

Durante la duración del programa, tres concursantes compiten en diferentes pruebas en las que tienen que responder a preguntas tipo trivial, poniendo a prueba su capacidad mental, de razonamiento y de memoria. La mayoría de las preguntas tienen un nivel de dificultad moderado y se reparten en seis juegos diferentes: «Cada sabio con su tema», donde cada concursante responde a preguntas sobre un tema determinado a su elección; «La pregunta caliente», donde los concursantes deben responder a preguntas al azar y elegir quién, de los otros dos concursantes, debe responderlas; «El duelo», donde dos concursantes responden a preguntas sobre un tema que cambia diariamente; «La parte por el todo», en el que los concursantes deben averiguar a qué pertenece una imagen, un texto o una pieza musical; «La calculadora humana», en el que el concursante con la segunda mayor puntuación debe responder a siete operaciones aritméticas básicas en 50 segundos para conservar sus ganancias del día; y, por último, «El reto», en el que el concursante con menor puntuación debe averiguar siete palabras a partir de su raíz y definición para seguir en el juego. Si el concursante pierde «El Reto», se elegirá a un nuevo individuo para sustituirlo en el siguiente episodio.
