Just at 14:35 I was passing in front of the Alfaques campsite when something happened that could have been avoided. Inside the tanker, which was carrying 25 tons instead of the maximum 19 tons, the liquid expanded due to the heat and exploded, turning everything in its path into an inferno. The truck broke in two and the parts advanced hundreds of meters like projectiles. The rear part, of larger dimensions, hit a restaurant. The fireball was projected in the direction of the camp where some 800 people were registered. It is estimated that between 300 and 400 people were in the range of the deflagration.
The main cause of the tragedy at the Alfaques campsite was negligence, as the liquid in the tank exceeded the regulatory levels. Residents and vacationers acted quickly and evacuated the injured with their own cars and caravans. The injured were transported to hospitals in Barcelona and Madrid, as well as to the burns unit of the former La Fe University Hospital in Valencia. During the following days and weeks, some 70 vacationers died due to the severity of their burns. In total 343 people died, most of them German, French and Belgian tourists. The identification of the bodies was very complicated due to their charred state. A terrible event that caused tremendous pain beyond our borders.
