In that time of stomach rumbling, of grays, of suspicions where the presumption of innocence was a chimera, where to seem was more important than to be, of the first student strikes and social contestation, the young man from Polaciones studied Economics. He also became a delegate of the University District of the Basque Country. His second was a student from Bilbao, brilliant in his studies, with whom he traveled to Madrid to participate in the sessions of the Sindicato Libre de Estudiantes that had been clandestinely set up in the capital. Upon their arrival, both were detained and arrested for two days on suspicion of being militants of Santiago Carrillo’s party.
With Cantabria in his DNA, the founder of the PRC returned to Santander and began teaching economics. In 1973 he became the regional delegate of Trade Unions in Torrelavega. A few months later, he experienced one of the worst moments of his life: he was accused of being a disguised ETA member because his surname coincided with that of a member of the gang. Only his father’s close friendships with Franco spared him from imprisonment and, perhaps, from the maximum sentence.
