The Class of ’92 es una película documental británica de 2013, estrenada el 1 de diciembre de 2013. La película se centra en el ascenso de seis jóvenes futbolistas del Manchester United -David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville y Paul Scholes- y detalla sus carreras en el Manchester United a partir de 1992.
El documental cubre el período que va desde la victoria del Manchester United en la FA Youth Cup en 1992 hasta su triunfo en la Liga de Campeones en 1999, que puso el broche de oro a la triple temporada 1998-99. La película se inserta en la narración de los cambios sociales y culturales que se estaban produciendo en Gran Bretaña en aquella época.
La película consiguió acceso completo a los seis jugadores e incluye también entrevistas con los ex futbolistas Zinedine Zidane y Eric Cantona, el ex entrenador de las categorías inferiores del Manchester United Eric Harrison, el cineasta Danny Boyle, el ex Primer Ministro Tony Blair y el bajista de The Stone Roses Mani.

In 1992, life was not so rosy for Manchester United fans. It was May and they had just lost the league title to bitter rivals Leeds United. The fans had to find solace, so many fans decided to come to Old Trafford to watch the youngsters from the youth academy.
That triumph christened the generation of youth players as the ‘Class of ’92’. Its pupils were illustrious: David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, the Neville brothers and Nicky Butt. All six went on to earn England caps and epitomized a turning point in United’s history. The pinnacle of this generation came in 1999, when they were part of the squad that won the Champions League at the Nou Camp.
«When we first met we didn’t like each other like we do now. I think they saw me as a bit of a London show-off. But after that there was no jealousy between us; we all had each other’s backs&rdquor.
Since then there have been three promotions in four seasons. The club has become more professional and now competes in the National League (fifth division) fighting for promotion to League 2. Last January, Becks bought a 10% stake in the club.

La máquina de los medios

Las estrellas del fútbol siempre serán un referente, ya sea como apoyo a la selección nacional o estando detrás de la línea técnica para dirigir a uno de los equipos de la liga. Sin embargo, los tiempos cambian y ahora la mirada está puesta en las divisiones menores para iniciar un proceso exitoso que lo eleve a primera.
Ese mismo ejemplo que aplicó el multimillonario tailandés Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha con el Leicester City, quiere ser igualado e incluso mejorado por los integrantes de la exitosa ‘Clase 92 del Manchester United’, descubierta por el técnico escocés Alex Ferguson, con el Salford City.
La ‘aventura’ comenzó con Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, y Gary y Phil Neville, apoyados por el multimillonario de Singapur, Peter Lim, actual propietario del Valencia de España, que en 2014 inyectó poderío económico y deportivo al modesto Salford City, un elenco ‘amateur’ ubicado en las afueras de Manchester y que dio la oportunidad a estos ‘cracks’ hace unos años.
Pero el ‘Dream Team’, ganador de la triple corona en 1999 con los ‘Red Devils’ (Liga, FA Cup y Champions League), no estaría completo sin la presencia de David Beckham, que este año decidió adquirir su 10 por ciento. Todos sus compañeros participan por igual en la integración del equipo, excepto Lim, y buscan darle más fuerza de cara a su nuevo reto: la quinta división.

«We wanted to replicate what the Class of ’92 did. This group of players can build the new foundation for the club. From Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay to Angel Gomes, James Garner, Mason Greenwood and Brandon,» he commented.
In that match, five homegrown boys defended the club’s colors on the field. However, Williams, who had traveled with the senior squad for the first time in his short career, was not added to the squad.
«The talent coming out of the club is overwhelming. A lot of lads from the youth teams are playing in the first team now, while others have the ability to be in the Premier League. So I think our Academy is very strong,» he concluded.
